Lost AT&T Connection Means Lost Business

FERNLEY, NV - Early Wednesday morning, AT&T got service fully restored to all of its customers in Northern Nevada who had been cut off since Monday. But the internet outage couldn't have come at a worse time for some businesses that cater to Valentine's Day. A florist in Fernley is now struggling to make up for all the sales it lost during the 33 hours customers couldn't place orders on the internet.

It's a busy day at Flowers by Mario in Fernley. But the flower shop should be a whole lot busier considering Valentine's Day is just hours awa.

"It's the number one day! The biggest day for our flower industry," says Mario Flores, of Flowers by Mario.

But a lot of customers' orders didn't make it through because the florist lost internet service for 33 hours.

"We couldn't get our incoming orders from other florists or out-of-state that we need to deliver. So we lost a lot of business that way," says Robin Blackmon, who works at the shop.

That's a huge blow to the florist. Mario Flores, who's been in business in Fernley for 10 years, says the timing of the internet blackout could not have been worse since Valentine's Day sales account for about a third of their business.

"frustrated," he says. "We are so frustrated because we were looking forward to get those orders and because we're ready. We have all the flowers. We have all the capacity. We hired extra people for deliveries and for sales. And we're not getting all those."

Now that the internet has been back up since Wednesday morning at 6am, workers are hoping more orders will pop up online and that people will call in and walk through the shop's doors on Main Street. Mario knows that every year, there are shoppers who procrastinate until Valentine's Day. He's hoping they'll think of his shop when buying this year.

The store will stay open until at least 7pm on Wednesday. On Thursday, they're opening up early at 6am. Customers who want to order online can now do so here: fbm@att.net. The phone number is 775-575-0200.
