Little of BLM Horse Budget Spent on Fertility

RENO, Nev. (AP) - New budget figures show the government spent less than 1 percent of its wild horse management budget on contraception programs and more than 60 percent on mustang holding facilities last year.

That's despite a pledge by the Bureau of Land Management to step up use of fertility control as an alternative to roundups of overpopulated mustang herds on U.S. rangelands.

Suzanne Roy of the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign says the BLM has reneged on a commitment to use fertility control to keep herds in check.

She says the administration appears to be creating a crisis to justify horse slaughter as the only solution to the skyrocketing costs of horse management.

BLM spokesman Tom Gorey says the agency opposes slaughter. He called the criticism "anti-BLM propaganda."
