Komen Reverses Decision on Planned Parenthood Funding
Reno
The Susan G Komen Foundation understands too well what a difference a day can make. Just 24 hours after adamantly standing by her plan to pull funding from Planned Parenthoods Breast Health Programs, founder Nancy Brinker reversed her decision.

RENO, NV - “We submitted a Komen grant yesterday,” says Pat Elzy from Reno’s Planned Parenthood.

Elzy says she got the news Friday morning from the national organization saying Komen had reversed its decision and will include Planned Parenthood in their funding.

“We will never bow to political pressure,”

That was the comment made by Komen founder, Nancy Brinker, on a taped statement on Komen’s web page yesterday,

She was assured and defiant.

In Friday's press release she apologized to Americans for decisions that may have cast doubt on the mission to save women's lives.

That doubt turned to anger for some people who went to Planned Parenthood with open arms and pocketbooks.

“I had several people physically come to our health center to talk to me. They said you saved my life. You found a breast tumor. Here is a donation. I can't give much,” says Elzy.

Elzy says the national offices collected $3,000,000 over the last three days for Planned Parenthood's breast cancer programs.

For breast cancer patient Theresa Cox, its unfortunate the entire affair had to happen.

“It’s very empowering, once you are there, that we all are fighting this disease and there's just a whole sea of pink and we are alive and kicking. I think it’s putting those of us who are fighting cancer right in the middle and in the crossfire. And I really feel that's unfortunate,” says Cox.

In the last 5 years Planned Parenthood Mar Monte here in Reno has received $200,000 from Komen.

That money went to self breast exam education, mammograms, and sonograms to low income women who have no insurance.
