Key Deadline for Holiday Mail Almost Here

RENO -- The main post office on Vassar Street in Reno is busy this time of year as a key deadline approaches. Saturday is the latest you can mail a package via standard mail in order for it to be received before Christmas.

According to the US Postal Service, cards and letters may be sent First Class as late as December 20th. The deadline for Priority Mail First Class packages is the twenty-first. Priority Mail Express is the twenty-third. Typically it's more costly the later Christmas gifts are mailed.

Reno postmaster Michael O. Behrend said additional staff are helping customers. He added people should not put decorative stamps on packages because it may confuse postal workers who are trying to verify a package has the correct postage paid.

According to the USPS, nearly 15-billion items will be delivered between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve.
