CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The slate of potential candidates for Reno mayor is now in the hands of the Nevada Supreme Court as it weighs whether current or former City Council members who are barred from re-election by term limits are eligible to run for mayor.

In arguments before the court Tuesday, the lawyer for candidate George "Eddie" Lorton argued that council members who've served 12 years cannot run for mayor because term limits prohibit them from serving on the same governing body.

But attorneys for former and current council members say the office of mayor is distinct from the office of city council members.

Justices asked specific and hypothetical questions of both sides. The court also indicated it would rule before candidate filing begins March 3.
