FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky newspaper story that quoted Mitch McConnell as saying it is "not my job" to bring employment to a struggling Kentucky County has unleashed yet another round of feuding in one of the country's most competitive Senate races.
A reporter for the Beattyville Enterprise asked McConnell what he would do to bring jobs to Lee County, where the unemployment rate is 12.8 percent. The paper quoted McConnell as saying it was up to the state government to bring jobs to Lee County.
Democratic candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes called McConnell's comments reprehensible and said creating jobs will be her top priority.
McConnell said his comments were taken out of context. He said all government officials should promote policies that create jobs, including a bill he sponsored that would lower federal taxes for areas that have high unemployment rates.
