SPARKS, Nev. -- Bargain hunters will have to look elsewhere to shop right before the holidays. JC's 5-Star Outlet is closing its doors and 39 employees will have to look for new jobs by the end of November. The store on Glendale is just one of 15 stores in the nation getting read to close its doors and for some, it couldn't have come at a worse time.
Mary Dickson had been out of the workforce for 14 years until she started working at JC's 5 Star Outlet. She's only worked there for month, so she was devastated when she got a phone call from her boss one afternoon.
"He said he had some bad news that all the stores were closing, so it might be open until November 30 and that's it," she said.
"I think it's horrible."
Her family is on a fixed income--her husband is retired and her daughter is in high school, so now they'll have to start cutting back.
"We won't have no extra income; that's for sure," she said. "We'll still make it by, but it sure helped."
Dickson is one of 1,400 employees nationwide who will lose their jobs at the outlet stores as early as December, right in the heart of the busy holiday season.
"The timing is horrible. For all the people and a time like this and to closing just before Christmas, you know they really could have planned it better," Fran Leon, a customer of nine years said.
A representative of the outlet stores says the decision to shut down for good was based on a continued decline in sales. Based on how much inventory is in stock, the staff says they hope to stay open through the holidays.
"How many people that work here can have a normal Christmas and holiday knowing that this is the end?" Leon added.
Until then, Dickson is back on the job hunt.
"Everyone's really nice and you know the store is a good place to work," Dickson said. "I'm really sad."
The company also confirms that the main JC Penney store will remain open. JC's 5 Star Outlet is having a blow out sale up to 50%t off on all items. The store is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
