SPARKS, Nev. -- The Outlets at Legends is introducing a new addition this week. After much anticipation, northern Nevada's first luxury IMAX theater is opening its doors Wednesday, Feb. 12. It's good news for movie lovers and even better news for surrounding businesses.
It was five years ago when rumors of a 3D IMAX theater would be built at the Outlets at Legends mall. Now, that idea has become a reality.
'The mall opened just as the financial meltdown was occurring, so that kind of delayed things," said Rafe Cohen, president of Luxury Theaters.
The new theater offers 12 screens, a libations bar and even reclining seats, making movie lovers feel like they're right at home.
"What we offer is a social experience," he said. "It's a night out and instead of a 72 inch screen at home,we have a 75 foot screen so it's a different experience."
It's not just movie-goers who are excited about the grand opening of the theater, nearby businesses have been waiting years for something to attract the customers.
Sunday afternoon, Cohen offered a limited audience a chance to experience Galaxy Luxury + IMAX theater before it officially opens for a good cause. All proceeds from tickets sales went to the family of the fallen Michael Landsberry. Tuesday, Feb. 11, proceeds will go toward the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows.
Holly wright, the manager of Grimaldi's Coal Brick Oven Pizzeria says the restaurant was built here in hopes the IMAX would draw in big crowds to the area.
"We were in the worst location before. People didn't even know we were here. people thought the mall ended at Scheels," she said. "For five years waiting for this to open and trying to build our sales and trying to get somebody out here just to know that we're here has been such a struggle."
However, she believes that all will change after February 12 when the theater officially opens, giving surrounding businesses a second chance.
"I can't wait until it opens," she said.
