RENO -- As record or near record cold settles into the western United States, many homeless people are being exposed to the potentially lethal conditions.
A representative from Volunteers of America said more than five hundred can be accommodated at the men's, women's and family shelters on Record Street. However, she said a warehouse with one hundred more beds is being used as an overflow shelter.
Cynthia Miller said she has been staying at the family shelter with her son for three months.
"One day we prayed to God to help us find a place and the same day they called us and said that they have a room available which was such a blessing," Miller said.
At the shelter, there are games for the kids and case-workers to help find more permanent housing situations.
"I still have a couple months here but they're definitely helping us out in trying to find a more permanent residence for us," Miller said.
Miller said she was recently hired to work in a local casino.
