Hitting the Road This Holiday Season

If you are one of the more than 80 million americans hitting the road this week, you'll be relieved to know gas prices are dropping. According to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report, the price for a gallon of regular in Northern Nevada is $3.37. That's down 6 cents since last week.

With a storm on the way experts say starting with a full tank of gas is the first step to a successful trip. They also recommend taking a blanket, gloves and water along for the ride. Scott Magruder of Nevada's Department of Transportation recommends tossing a shovel or kitty litter in your trunk to help regain traction in case you get stuck in the snow. "Of course, most of the state highways are plowed and well maintained," he says "but if you start getting off the beaten path, you may want to watch out on that."

According to NDOT, all major roadways will be clear of construction over the next two weeks. Dial 5-1-1 before you get behind the wheel for the latest on weather closures, restrictions and conditions . You'll get up to the minute information for Nevada roads on either side of the state line.

In light of storm conditions Magruder says it's best to stick to the roads you know, and avoid unfamiliar routes that may not be as well maintained. If you do find yourself stranded, and you have cell service you, can summon help by calling *NHP or 9-1-1.
