High River Levels In Lyon County Expected to Last Through the Week

YERINGTON – The mainstem of the Walker River in Mason Valley continues to run above Flood Stage.

Lyon County officials say minor to moderate flooding is occurring along the Walker River from Mason to Wabuska. Flooding of lowlands, pasture, cropland and some rural roads is occurring and is expected to continue at or near its current level through this week.

The East and West Forks of the Walker River continue to have high flows. Water has spread out into some low lying areas along both Forks of the Walker River.

A Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect for the mainstem of the Walker River in Lyon County from Mason to Weber Reservoir, including Mason, Mason Valley, Yerington and Wabuska.

Emergency officials are also urging parents to make sure their children stay away from rivers and streams. This is especially important during the spring snow melt season when water temperatures are very cold, the water is flowing fast and the water is deep.

Lyon County will continue to monitor river levels, prepare for flooding and provide information to the citizens of Lyon County. Lyon County Emergency Management recommends that persons in low lying areas along the Walker River take necessary precautions to prepare for possible moderate flooding. Persons living or owning property along the River should monitor water levels.

Lyon County and the City of Yerington have initiated preparations for flooding on the Walker River, and Lyon County has also initiated preparations for flooding on the Carson River.
