VIRGINIA CITY, NV - Last weekend a chimney fire damaged a historic Virginia City home. Local historians call it the House of Seven Gables and it dates back to the late 1800s. According to Tahoe House Hotel manager Tammi Davis, Jack and Michelle Kras were renting the home and in the process of buying it when it caught fire.

"They're still trying to retrieve some things out of it and resettle their lives," Davis said. "It's been really hard for them to get back to work with all this going on. Jack does a lot in the community as far as handiwork and construction."

She says the couple has a place to stay in the meantime but they lost a lot of their belongings. So she organized a silent auction at the Tahoe House Hotel on Saturday and said community support was overwhelming.

"The response from the community has been incredible," Davis said. "We've had not only the merchants donate items but individuals have been donating as well, the Mustang Ranch came out and wrote a check and donated some items to the auction, we really appreciate all the support."

There's a pub crawl that starts at 6:00 Saturday and proceeds from that will benefit the cause as well.

"It amazes me because no matter what progress we make we still hold on to our heritage and we still hold on to that neighbor-helping-neighbor mentality," Davis said. "That to me speaks of our community which is why I think we're all here, that's why we all love this communtiy."
