Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid has announced the Sun Valley post office will remain open after working closely with the United States Postal Service. Reid expressed his concern to the USPS and sent more than 50 constituent letters to the Post Office to ensure that their review included comments from affected Nevadans.
“After months of evaluation, I am pleased that the USPS has decided to keep the Sun Valley Post Office open. I have been working with the USPS to ensure they understand the importance of the Sun Valley post office in northern Nevada. I am glad that the USPS listened to the voices of those who would have been impacted by a possible closing from senior citizens to disabled veterans. We need comprehensive postal reform and I am hopeful the House and Senate can reach an agreement to modernize the USPS and ensure mail delivery for Nevada and the country.”
RENO, Nev. (AP) - A week before the U.S. Postal Service closes a public comment period on a proposal to shutter a small post office in Sun Valley north of Reno, U.S. Sen. Dean Heller says he still hasn't received the explanation he's requested to justify the move.
The Nevada Republican said in a letter to the postmaster general last week he's not convinced there's been a close enough look at the negative impact the closure could have on consumers and businesses.
Service officials promised to get Heller any information he wants before the Sept. 29 deadline for comment on the proposal they say will save $500,000 over 10 years.
But they say they don't understand why the remaining 200 customers with Sun Valley PO boxes won't accept the home delivery available to everyone there.
