Groundhog Day: Phil and Chuck Predict an Early Spring

By  |

STATEN ISLAND, NY & PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA (CNN) - Both famous weather-predicting groundhogs are calling for an early spring!

Staten Island Chuck is on the same page as the more well-known Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania. Neither of them saw their shadows this morning, which means an early spring according to the old tradition. But people who were outside in freezing temperatures for the celebrations may have trouble believing them.

The Punxsutawney tradition takes place at Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania on Groundhog's Day and has been around for almost 130 years. Officials there say this is one of the largest crowds in history. Some people arrived as early as 3am just to get a good spot!

The tradition with Staten Island Chuck has been around for 32 years.
