RENO, Nev.— The Reno Aces’ bid for their first series sweep of the season came up just short thanks to a 10-4 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies Friday night at Aces Ballpark.
The loss snapped the Aces’ four-game winning streak, and marked just the fourth time in 14 series’ this season that Reno dropped the finale.
Fresno scored a run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead, but Reno answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.
The Aces hit around in the bottom of the first, and registered six hits in the inning. Mike Jacobs doubled to left field to drive in Didi Gregorius and Alfredo Marte, and scored on a single by Aaron Cunningham.
Cunningham scored on a Bobby Wilson single two batters later and the Aces ended the inning up three. Wilson’s single extended his hitting streak to 10 games, which ties him with Jacobs and Nick Evans for the longest Aces hitting streak this season.
Fresno cut the lead to one in the third with a two-run home run by Mark Minicozzi.
The Grizzlies took the lead for good in a fifth inning that saw them send 10 batters to the plate. The frame was highlighted by Chris Dominguez’ three-run homer to right field.
Dominguez hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to cap the scoring and give Fresno a 10-4 win.
Jacobs and Alfredo Marte each had three hits on the night, and Gregorius and Wilson each finished with two. Jacobs was the only Aces player to drive in two runs on the night.
Reno will travel to Las Vegas tomorrow to open up a four-game series against the 51s. The Aces will send right-hander Mike Bolsinger (4-0, 1.47) to the hill, and Las Vegas hasn’t named a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
