One baby sleep expert says following her advice will have your baby sleeping through the night in no time.

"I just truly was amazed at how quickly they were able to go from getting up three to four times a night and having to be nursed to sleep, to suddenly sleeping 12 hours a night," said Carrie Towers, mother of two.

Many new parents struggle with sleep deprivation.

"It creates degrees of depression, and questioning their abilities, and their ability to be patient with their children, maintain their personal relationships," said Karen Pollak, sleep expert from Babies2Sleep.com.

For Carrie Towers, now it's a different story, thanks to some help from Pollak, who taught Carrie some tricks to get her kids to sleep though the night. Her biggest piece of advice, make sure your kids are getting the right nutrition.

"The more nutrition they get during the day, the more rested they'll be able to be during the night," said Pollak.

"Feeding on a schedule, not nursing every two hours. Nursing every three to four hours so they're hungry and they fill themselves up," said Towers.

Karen also tells parents to create a soothing environment in the baby or toddler's bedroom, with blinds that block sunlight, and a white noise machine. The darkness and sound will trigger to your baby that it's time to go to sleep. Another trick, use a blanket, or "lovey."

"[A lovey] is basically a part of me. So, she taught me to put the lovey on my shoulders, I had it on me while I was nursing Henry, and then when I put him into the crib, he would take the lovey with him, so that he would ave my scent, which would help with the self-soothing.

Another tip: get rid of bed-time routines that overstimulate kids. That means no TV, no baths, and no story time.

"You could read stories all day long, and you don't need to do it before bed because it stimulates them. A bath stimulates them, so give them a bath at 3 in the afternoon, and make it a routine, but only make it 5 minutes long. So that was huge, because the dinner hour became a pleasant time," said Towers.

Also, some parents use motion to put their baby to sleep. But rocking your baby, or taking them for a stroller or car ride doesn't teach the baby to self-soothe. The sleep isn't as restorative as crib sleep, so they won't be as rested.

It usually takes a couple of weeks to get a baby on a new sleep schedule.
