RENO, Nev. - Hot August Nights Festivities begin in South Lake Tahoe on Friday.
"We're really excited about the response to this weekend's show," Hot August Nights Executive Director Tony Marini said. "It's always great to be next to the lake."
The show will move to the Reno-Sparks area on Sunday.
"We have a great local base here, we get 2000 local cars registered every year and another 2000 that are driving around so locals are great supporters of this event," Marini said.
Plenty of classic cars are also shipped here for the event.
"We just got a call, some people sent cars from Hawaii and put them in storage units," Marini said. "If we're getting cars from Hawaii they're excited to be here and we welcome them with open arms."
Local casinos that are hosting events expect to be at capacity in coming weeks.
"We look forward to this every year," said Kimberlee Tolkien, Asst. General Manager of Atlantis Casino Resort. "We have $125,000 in prizes and drawings, we're giving away a new Mustang and we even have commemorative gaming chips and club cards for the event."
And local businesses near event sites are looking to cash in as well.
"It's a big push for our business," said Bonda Young of Great Basin Brewing Company in Victorian Square. "We're steady the rest of the year but this is the icing on the cake for us, everybody's excited to be down here enjoying the atmosphere."
New this year - an autocross event open to all registered participants.
"You take your classic car and race it on a little course and whoever has the best time is the winner," Mancini said. "The annual drag races are great and this is just one more thing for people to enjoy at this event."
