CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - As a national transportation group released a report painting a dismal picture of Nevada's roadways, state lawmakers are considering upping the gas tax to pay for road maintenance.

Democratic Sen. Tick Segerblom of Las Vegas is proposing a bill to the Senate Committee on Revenue and Economic Development Thursday. His bill, SB377, would increase the tax on motor vehicle gas, other than jet fuel, and some other gas types.

The meeting follows the release of a report by TRIP, a national transportation research group. That report indicated efficiency by Nevada state agencies responsible for road maintenance, but also a drastic shortfall in funding. Segerblom says the increased gas taxes in his bill will generate $3 billion for road maintenance over the next ten years.
