THIS YEAR'S FEATURED EVENTS:
The Bloody Rose - Mountain Bike Climb
The Bloody Rose mountain bike race challenges the endurance and spirit of its participants. The 12.2
mile course throws in several sections steeper than 15 percent, mixing in single track, fire roads, and
sections of pavement. The first true test for riders is a 15 percent grade, the "Wall of Death", where
knobby tires fight for traction on the sandy surface. Continuing up the mountain, riders pass over the
highest year-round road in the Sierra, get a brief downhill respite, then commence a death march up
NFD 051. The next four miles are as much about survival as they are about speed. When "Funeral Hill"
ramps up to 16 percent, riders have to dodge softball-sized rocks and sear their lungs at almost two
miles above sea level. Many get off to walk at this point. Those that make the 4,000 ft. ascent to the
10,128 ft. summit will reach the payoff of spectacular views of Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley, not to
mention bragging rights for completing the challenge.
The Wicked Thorn Trail Run and the Fun Run
Taking advantage of the most scenic trails in The Galena Forest, "The Wicked Thorn" trail run
accommodates runners of most fitness levels. Participants will find the entire 7.25 miles challenging and
rewarding. Those not up to The Wicked Thorn have the option of a 1.7 mile Fun Run. All courses are
meticulously marked and wind through spectacular areas of Galena Forest.
Food, Festival, Live Music and Kid's Creativity Area
This year's Galena Fest will have a Kid's Creativity Area and a Big Fish Contest, sponsored by the Nevada
Department of Wildlife, for children up to age 14, and other park activities for families. The festival will
also have an expo area with demonstrations, exhibits and information.
Galena Fest will have a BBQ with The Lodge at Galena, food trucks, a beer and beverage terrace with Great
Basin Brewery and Luva Bella Wine Gallery, and live music. This year's bands include 7 Days Gone and
Galena resident and Galena Times Publisher, Richard Keillor founded the festival in 2009 to help raise
much needed funds to reestablish outdoor recreation programs for children at the park.
