RENO -- Washoe County residents are being offered free ash cans as part of an effort to encourage people to safely dispose of fireplace ashes this winter. The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District teamed up with two casinos and Carter Brothers Ace Hardware to make the program possible. Firefighters also made a video to teach people how to properly, and safely, dispose of ashes.

"Sometimes they even put them in their big green garbage cans, or a plastic garbage can, and the ashes heat up and start a fire," Amy Ray, Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District fire marshal, said.

The effort comes as Reno marks two years since the devastating Washoe Drive Fire. The fire, which was caused by fireplace ashes, destroyed 29 homes and forced thousands to evacuate.
