If you think the Fitzgerald’s Hotel Casino has been sitting dormant for the last couple of years on South Virginia, you’d be wrong.
According to documents filed with the city of Reno, the property will have a new name “Comm Row” The grand opening will be sometime this summer. But there’s a lot more to this property than a name, there’s also a climbing wall.
The proposed climbing wall be on the South Virginia side of the current Fitzgerald’s. If approved by the planning commission with the city of Reno, it will be the largest climbing wall in the world at 168 feet. The only thing close to that height is in the Netherlands.
But a climbing wall is just one aspect of an ambitious project. The wall is the marquis of Comm Row.
The property hopes to cater to a client other than the gambler. There will be no gaming and apparently it won’t be a full service, open 24-hour type operation.
According to documents, the property wants to attract the 17,000 university students just blocks away.
There will be plenty to do from small more health minded restaurants--smaller entertainment venues--concerts that may seat only 200 people.
Comm Row hopes to attract events like the X Games and all that entails. It would also like ot hope sponsored events.
There’s even an inside boulder park and doggie day care for guests.
Initially the property will only open about 136 rooms. But that can be expanded to more than 200 rooms if needed.
Fernando Leal, owner of the Montage, is behind the innovative project.
But neither he nor others familiar with Comm Row was prepared to talk on camera.
One person estimates upon opening it could employ as many as 150 people.
Everyone will get a better idea of this entire project when it’s presented in front of the Reno Planning Commission on Friday February 11.
The Commission is being asked, among other things, if the property can encroach onto Commerical Row.
That encroachment has to do with balconies on the property that will over hang on to Commerical Row.
