CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says
Nevada's black bears don't warrant protection under the Endangered
Species Act.
The service released its finding Tuesday in response to a petition filed in September by two wildlife groups, NoBearHuntNV.org and Big Wildlife.
Federal officials say Nevada's black bears are not a distinct population, and there's no evidence that they are markedly different from other black bears in the region.
Most of Nevada's black bears are found in the eastern Sierra in and around Lake Tahoe. Biologists say the same species is found in
California and in the Cascade Range of northern California and
southern Oregon.
