RENO, Nev. (AP) - A Reno businessman who pleaded guilty to collecting payroll tax from his employees but not giving the money to the IRS has been sentenced to 27 months in prison.

Paul Bryan Reddis was also ordered to pay nearly $680,000 in restitution at sentencing Wednesday.

Authorities say Reddis owned and operated a long haul trucking business called CK Trucking between 1988 and 2007. Reddis admitted in a plea agreement that he willfully started withholding the money from the IRS in 2003 and kept it for his personal use.

He pleaded guilty in October to one count of willful failure to pay over payroll tax.

IRS officials say this type of crime has real consequences for U.S. government coffers, but also means the loss of employees' future Social Security or Medicare benefits.
