CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Former longtime northern Nevada Assemblyman John Marvel has died at the age of 86.

Marvel's son, John E. Marvel, confirms his father died Saturday at a hospital in Carson City. He says he had battled through a variety of health problems over the past six years, including lung disease.

John Sr. served in the Nevada legislature for 30 years until his retirement in 2008. The Battle Mountain Republican was known for his conservative politics and defense of farmers and ranchers in Humboldt and Lander Counties.

In his later years, his district was stretched all the way west to Washoe County to include part of Sparks. In 2003, he was among a handful of Republicans who crossed party lines to break a seven-week impasse over taxes and public school funding.

Governor Brian Sandoval issued this statement regarding Marvel's passing:

“John Marvel was a friend and mentor to me when I served with him in the Legislature. A son of Battle Mountain, John was a fierce advocate for rural issues and a leader in the Legislature. Nevada is stronger because of John’s service and I extend my condolences to John’s wife, Willie, and his children.”

Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s First District released the following statement on the passing of Former Assemblyman John Marvel:

“I had the pleasure and honor of serving with John Marvel in the Legislature for two decades. I did not always agree with him, but I never doubted his integrity nor questioned his fierce advocacy for rural Nevadans.

“John will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time.”
