RENP, NV - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) are reminding drivers to exercise caution while driving in road work zones during National Work Zone Awareness Week and throughout the year.
National Work Zone Awareness Week begins Monday, April 7, 2014 and ends Friday, April 11, 2014.
An official with NDOT says drivers are reminded to drive safely while in road work zones.
She says two NDOT contractors were killed last year after an inattentive driver hit them with their car. She also adds that an NDOT maintenance employee is still recovering after being hit and severely injured while working on a state roadway in Fallon last summer.
"There were nearly 600 crashes in Nevada work zones last year," NHP Trooper Dave Gibson said. "Whether it's slowing down, buckling up or generally focusing on the road, we all can help make it zero fatalities on the road for ourselves and our families by giving the road your undivided attention, particularly in road work zones. If you commit a traffic violation in a marked construction zone, you will be cited and the fines will be doubled."
Nevada law doubles the penalty for speeding, up to $1,000, in any marked road construction or maintenance work zone when workers are present.
