Downtown Reno Could Get New Grocery Soon

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Downtown Reno may soon be getting only its second grocery store in the past two decades.

A Reno businessman has acquired the seven-story building that once housed a Woolworth's five-and-dime a block north of the Truckee River on North Virginia Street at First Street

Jamy Keshmiri, owner of the Ben's Fine Wine & Spirits chain of stores, acquired the long-empty building from the California-based Latitude Capital Partners for an undisclosed price. Built in 1912, it's been vacant since 1997.

Keshmiri tells the Reno-Gazette Journal he thinks the availability of an affordable grocery market is key to developing a viable downtown core.

Only one other grocer has served the downtown area since the Mayfair market closed 20 years ago to make way for the Silver Legacy Resort Casino.
