RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada police are investigating how and why a White Pine residential hall employee was stabbed overnight.

UNR police say they got a call at about 2:30am Saturday and when they arrived they found the victim in the building's lobby. She had been stabbed in the abdomen. Emergency crews took the victim to a hospital. She underwent surgery and her condition remains stable.

Officers arrested a UNR student, 18-year-old Christopher Stephen Williams at the scene. Williams is charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon Causing Substantial Bodily Harm and Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He remains in the Washoe County jail.

University police continue their investigation into the incident, however, in an email to the student body, Director of Public Services Adam Garcia and President Marc Johnson express "heartfelt appreciation for this employee's bravery and actions." Police say the employee had the "presence of mind to alert others in the residence hall and give police necessary information for an arrest prior to seeking assistance for her own wounds."
