FERNLEY, NV - A woman is dead after being hit by a vehicle Monday night in Fernley.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, it happened at Farm District Road and Jenny's Lane about 8:30PM.

The preliminary investigation indicates 63-year-old Sylvestra Alvarado of Fernley was walking westbound across Farm District Road in or near the marked crosswalk when she was hit by a sedan driven by a Fallon woman. Alvarado was pronounced dead at the scene. No one in the sedan was injured and the driver is cooperating with investigators, according to the NHP, which says alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor.

Trooper Dave Gibson says, "As far as we know as of right now, it was a mistake of not being able to see someone crossing the crosswalk."

Farm District Road is a two-lane roadway where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour.

The intersection was closed for several hours while troopers completed their on-scene portion of the investigation.

Trooper Doug Hildebrand of the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating. Witnesses or anyone with additional information are encouraged to contact him at (775) 689-4623 or dhildebrand@dps.state.nv.us regarding case number NHP-140401241.
