County Seeks Help from Advocacy Group in Sage Grouse Conservation

ELKO, Nev. (AP) - An Elko County official says talks have begun with area environmental advocacy groups about funding sage grouse conservation efforts in northeastern Nevada.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports that County Assistant Manager Randy Brown reported informal meetings with the Northeastern Nevada Stewardship Group, and said a proposal may be submitted to the Western Watersheds Project.

Brown says the county hopes Western Watersheds may be willing to allocate for endangered sage grouse rescue some of about $15 million in conservation funds it received in 2010 from gas pipeline builder El Paso Corp.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife and the Bureau of Land Management also received more than $8 million for conservation and mitigation from the Ruby Pipeline builder, and the Nevada Public Lands Committee also has conservation money set aside.
