LAS VEGAS (AP) - A legislative committee is supporting a Board of Regents-sponsored college funding plan that would shift money from northern Nevada schools south.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the committee decided to back the proposal Wednesday. The measure will be forwarded to the full Legislature for the 2013 session.

The two-year proposal would be based on the number of students who complete courses, rather than the number of students who enroll in a course. It would also fund courses differently if they cost more.

About $13.2 million would be cut from four northern Nevada colleges and redistributed to University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada, and Nevada State College in Henderson.

Representatives from the Elko area argue the measure will be "catastrophic" for rural Nevada's Great Basin College.
