RENO, NV - Some Reno city employees will start getting pink slips Friday, now that the city council has passed a budget designed to save $6 million.

Citywide, 146 positions will be cut, either through layoffs or vacant positions not filled.

The Reno Police Department faces 45 layoffs, 11 of them police officers. And the Reno Fire Department will cut 43 positions, while closing three stations.

More cuts will be spread out through other departments. And while layoffs begin Friday, the city is leaving the door open until March 1 to figure out other ways to save money that might not require such severe layoffs.

The city is currently in talks with union officials about possible concessions.

Hey communitymember, I tried posting the "details" on Friday, guess KoloTV doesn't want you to know. In a second attempt to at least provide a link you can find them yourself (as encumbersome as it may be) under the City Council section, Past Events, Special Session dated 2/10/11 (http://www.reno.gov/index.aspx?recordid=9272&page=67), then click on Staff Reports (which will open a pdf file). Scroll down the document to page 11 where they start with the Police department.
