On Friday, the Stewart family did something they do on this day every year. They went Christmas tree shopping.

"Always as soon as you can get it, we like to get a Christmas tree ASAP," said Andy Stewart.

It's the day after Thanksgiving, and they're getting ready for the holidays, starting with a search for the perfect tree.

"We're just checking out the Christmas trees and shopping around like everybody else," said Stewart.

The Christmas tree lot on Virginia and Plumb just opened, and it's a part of a holiday tradition itself. It's run by local Boy Scouts.

"We're kind of a landmark here as far as Christmas season," said Lori Bigham, a troop leader.

"Troop 107 has been in Reno for 59 years, and we've been selling Christmas Trees almost every year," said Casey Omaye, a Boy Scout.

The money they make from selling trees funds troop activities all year long, and they say there's a good reason they open on the day after Thanksgiving every year.

"Everyone starts thinking about Christmas, and they set up all their Christmas lights," said Omaye.

The Stewart family says, that's what brought them to the Christmas tree lot on Friday.

Sam Stewart says he wants to "find a good tree." His brother Eric says "it's fun to decorate a tree and buy it."

So, how do they keep their new tree fresh until Christmas?

"Just put it in the water, and lots of love," said Andy Stewart.

The lot on Virginia and Plumb is open every day after school so the Boy Scouts can be there to run it. And it's open all day on the weekends.

My dad and I bought trees there 40 years ago. That's when Shoppers Square had Skaggs and Mayfair Market.
