RENO, Nev. - Every holiday season the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows helps out member families in need. This year they had a little extra help from the local chamber of commerce. The Chamber donated $15,000 worth of gifts and handed them out at Sun Valley Elementary School Wednesday night.
“We are the beneficiaries of a very generous community and it's always been that way,” Rick Stevens of the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows said. “These are the kids that really need the help, the kids in circumstances beyond their control so for the community to rally around them and make sure they're getting a great Christmas, that's really special.”
More than 120 children received personalized gift baskets and spent a little time with Santa. Many came prepared.
“I'm very excited and I'm wearing my favorite boots,” 7-year-old Jasmine said. “My favorite part of Christmas is opening up presents.”
The wish lists varied.
“I asked for a watch and some books so I can keep reading in school and become a better reader,” 9- year-old Diana said.
“I asked for my brother to stop being mean to me,” 8-year-old Katryn said.
The Boys and Girls club hosted almost two dozen Christmas parties in the last week; officials there say it's rewarding to see smiles on faces young and old.
“The smiles on the parents' faces, the kids' faces, we've done holiday help all week and now we're doing this and there's so much appreciation,” Stevens said. “The hugs you get from the parents; maybe this is something they weren't able to provide but the community has gathered together to provide it for them.”
The Chamber chooses a different youth charity to sponsor every year.
