Sheriff Describes Fatal Carson Shooting

CARSON CITY, NV - Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says a homicide Sunday night apparently happened over a child custody issue.

About 8:30PM, deputies responded to a report of a man shot on West Washington Street in Carson. They found 32-year-old James Lay at his home, shot in the chest. Lay was pronounced dead a short time later, before being taken to a hospital.

32-year-old David Grimes was taken into custody voluntarily at 10:10 by Carson City sheriff's deputies. He remains in custody charged with Murder. His bail is $250,000, and he is set for his first court appearance Thursday morning.

While the incident remains under investigation, witnesses say the altercation may have been sparked by a domestic argument following a child custody exchange. Following a confrontation inside the residence, Grimes and Lay continued the incident into the street in front of the home. Grimes allegedly pulled a gun and shot Lay one time in the chest, then ran off. After about an hour, Grimes contacted the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and expressed a desire to turn himself in to authorities. A short time later, Grimes arrived at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and turned himself over to arresting officers.
