CARSON CITY, NV - A 23-year-old man is being processed at the Carson City jail after a nearly four-hour long standoff in the capital city.
Sheriff Ken Furlong tells KOLO 8 News Now that deputies were attempting to serve multiple felony warrants out of California and one warrant out of Carson City to John Vallerio in the south Carson area around 4:30pm Tuesday. However, when they found Vallerio, in the neighborhood of Silver Sage Drive and Roventini Way, Vallerio tried to drive off. That started a short car chase. Vallerio then jumped out of his car, and ran to a nearby home at 4359 Silver Sage Drive, said to be the residence of someone he knows.
Vallerio barricaded himself inside the home, and at times claimed to be suicidal. Since one of the warrants officers originally tried to serve him was for being the suspect in stealing a Glock handgun, Furlong says they had to operate under the assumption that Vallerio was armed. At about 6:15 Tuesday night negotiators and the SWAT Team arrived at the home. Authorities continued communication with Vallerio for hours throughout the night, but around 8pm SWAT deployed tear gas in the home, and flushed him out.
Vallerio was taken into custody without incident at 8:08pm.
