Death of Douglas Toddler Ruled Accidental

GARDNERVILLE, NV - Sheriff's investigators say the death of a 4-year-old boy in his family's driveway was purely an accident.

Douglas County sheriff's officials say the afternoon of February 24th in the Spring Valley area south of Gardnerville, Mason Geist and his father were in a U-Haul truck, the father positioning it in a driveway. The father says he placed the vehicle in park, left the engine running, and got out of the cab to check the clearance area around the vehicle. The driver door of the truck was left open and the boy remained in the cab. The truck ended up moving down the driveway, and the boy was ejected from the cab. He was run over by the truck.

The investigation has established that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident, and that the U-Haul truck did not have any mechanical malfunction which contributed to the accident. It is believed the boy shifted the truck from park into neutral, causing the vehicle to go into motion, which resulted in Mason being ejected from the cab of the truck.

The report will be forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney for final review.
