RENO, NV - Right in line with Tesla, another company has announced a clean energy initiative in Nevada. Fulcrum BioFuels will open a plant in Storey County that will convert household trash into jet fuel, diesel fuel, or maritime fuel. The plant will be the first of its kind and its CEO says this process could eventually replace landfills.
Senator Harry Reid made the announcement Thursday morning at the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas. "Doing this is so important for our country," said Reid. Reid announced that Fulcrum BioFuels will move into the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.
"We are negotiating our contracts to start construction later this year. It takes 2 years to construct and about 200 million dollars," said James Macias, CEO of Fulcrum BioFuels.
That money is coming largely from a Bank of America loan that was made possible through a guarantee from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "The USDA is committed to the administrations all-in energy policy which is to make the country less dependent on fossil fuels," said Lillian Salerno, Administrator for the Rural Business-Cooperative Service branch of the USDA.
It's amazing how they plan to do it. They take organic material from food, paper, clothing, or even wood and simply decompose it to simple elements. "It is the same process that the earth took millions and millions of years to do which creates fossil fuels. We are doing it in a matter of seconds," said Macias.
There will be two facilities, one in Lockwood for sorting trash, and a second in Tahoe Reno Industrial Center where the fuel will be made.
"We have plans to construct dozens of plants across the country including an expansion there in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Complex," said Macias.
This is just the start. The CEO of the company told us he sees a day when landfills wont be needed because this process will be so widespread. "I see a day where there is no need for landfills and this is the ultimate recycling and recovery," said Macias.
The facility will be open in 2016. About 500 people will be employed during its construction. 100 people will have full time jobs working the plant.
