RENO, NV - It looks busy at the Peppermill Sports book, but by Friday and up until Saturday afternoon, it will get crazy as the 139th Kentucky Derby draws near.
The run for the roses means green for local sports books as those who don't normally wager will do so for the Kentucky Derby.
“In terms of the number of tickets we will write on Saturday, its actually more than Superbowl Sunday. You can bet exactas, trifectas, superfectas. There's pick 3s pick 4s pick 6s all kind of ways to win this thing,” says Terry Cox, Manager of the Sports Book at the Peppermill.
John Harris is a regular and says he's one of those who takes on the exotic bet.
While he looks over the racing papers not much he says will steer him from his pick this year Java's War.
“Of all the foals born three years previous there is a line on them if they make it to the derby and if you pick one that makes it all the way, you get a better odds on this is a future's bet. Its almost like the stock market,” says Harris
While the floor at the Sports Book will be packed the closer post time approaches,
The Peppermill hopes to take advantage of derby weekend by setting up a party upstairs from here, and in their nightclub specials drinks like the Southern Belle and Mint Julep Jel.
Along with the drinks, bourbon pecan divinity, a pecan truffle, and Kentucky Derby Chocolate Cake will be available beginning Friday night.
