STATELINE, Nev. (AP) - A 3-year-old black bear trapped and caught at a Stateline condominium complex near Lake Tahoe has been released back into the wild.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife says the 150-pound female was released Friday after being tagged and tattooed. Hair and blood samples also were taken as part of an ongoing research project.
The bear did not have cubs.
Biologists say they've had no previous contact with the bear and its weight indicates it was not yet a "garbage" bear looking to human trash for food. To try to dissuade it, the bear was given a healthy dose of aversion conditioning upon its release.
Wildlife officials shot it with rubber bullets and dogs chased it away. The idea is to convince a bear it doesn't want to come near people.
