'Be A Santa To A Soldier' Deadline Nears

RENO, NV - It's not too tough to spot Paula Fleming's house in her neighborhood. She's the one with the American and Blue Star Flag in front.

Inside you can see she's prepping for Christmas, the tree is up, and she's just finished baking cookies.

But it's not all for her; frequently it's for military men and women serving our country.

She remembers a couple Christmases ago, when her son Josh was serving as an Army medic in Afghanistan.

"A truck cookie cutter. I sent huge boxes over to my son when I knew he would open and go, "What are you thinking, mom?" But of course the girls that were there with him, they all knew exactly what it was, and they eventually took the box from them. They spent hours decorating them. Some of the guys even got involved. And he said that was the best Christmas gift they had had in a long time," says Fleming, with the Blue Star mothers of America Chapter #3.

Her son Josh is now in Washington State and will be off active duty on January first.

But that hasn't stopped Fleming continuing her efforts in supporting military men and women serving in Afghanistan.

She'll be sending Christmas Cards from local kindergarten children who are sending best wishes.

Such a gesture reminds her of our "Be A Santa to a Soldier" program, asking local residents to buy a Christmas and gift card--write a message, and place the gift card in an unsealed envelope--a plastic bag and bring it to the station.

Such gifts will go to Nevada men and women serving in Afghanistan.

"You know what am I going to do with a $15 gift card? Who is going to care about that? But when they actually get the card, and they are able to go on line at their base and order something, that goes a long way in saying, hey somebody thought of me, and I can actually turn around and give my family something," says Fleming.

The deadline is this Friday to get your cards into the station or other drop off location.

We hope to have hundreds of cards to servicemen and women by Christmas.

Drop-Off Locations: KOLO 8 on Ampere Drive, R.C. Willey in south Reno. Cumulous Broadcasting on E. Plumb Lane, Charley's Grilled Subs in Carson City.
