LAS VEGAS (AP) - With the resignation of Nevada Sen. John Ensign, Gov. Brian Sandoval must now appoint a successor.
He's widely expected to name GOP Congressman Dean Heller, who
has already announced he was seeking Ensign's seat. A special election would then be held for Heller's seat.
Sandoval endorsed Heller after he announced his candidacy.
Former Gov. Bob List is urging Sandoval to appoint Heller. An
appointment would give Heller, and the GOP, the advantage of incumbency, even if just for 18 months.
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee executive director Guy
Cecil said Nevada remains a top target for Democrats trying to protect their fragile majority in the Senate.
