SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA - A skier injured in the backcountry by Echo Peak is safe and warm after a daring rescue.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call just after 3:30pm Wednesday.

A 36-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe called for help. He was skiing with his dog when he injured his right knee and couldn't continue.

Deputies asked for help from the CHP Air Operations unit out of Auburn.

The helicopter pilot and crew were able to locate the skier right away. But because of his remote location, steep terrain, deep snow and avalanche conditions, they couldn't land.

So CHP Officer Mark Florez was lowered to the skier with a hoist. Florez secured the man and his dog, and the crew lifted them out of the area.

The skier was found at 8,400 feet.

No word on whether the skier was taken to a hospital.
