TONOPAH, Nev. (AP) - The Bureau of Land Management is planning to gather wild horses and burros from the range in central Nevada and offer the animals for immediate, on-site adoption.

The BLM says trap site adoptions will coincide with planned roundups of mustangs from the Stone Cabin Complex in February, and of burros in the Bullfrog Herd Management Area scheduled to begin in March.

Exact dates or locations for the adoption events have not yet been set.

But officials say people interested in adopting an animal on-site should contact the BLM beforehand. Regular adoption requirements and fees will apply.

The agency plans to remove about 500 horses and roughly 30 burros from the area near Tonopah.

Mobile slaughter units could save Alpo a bunch in transportation and canning costs.

This will really save on transportation and ongoing care costs. Also will allow the horses to adapt to their new owners more quickly.
