GOLD HILL, Nev. (AP) - The federal Bureau of Land Management and
Comstock Mining Inc. are fighting over 25 acres of rural land.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that the BLM has notified Comstock that if it continues to use the plot of land in Gold Hill it could face a $1,000 fine, a 12-month sentence, or both. Comstock Mining counters that the land has been privately owned since at least 1869.
Comstock hopes to soon begin mining up to $3 billion worth of
gold and silver from areas near Virginia City.
BLM officials say the company was trespassing by widening a haul
road on public land between its pit and processing site without
authorization.
Storey County Manager Pat Whitten says the disputed land has
long been taxed by the county as private property.
