RENO -- The Reno City Council approved a contract with Tutto Ferro for artwork associated with the new Virginia Street Bridge Wednesday.
Work replacing the iconic bridge in downtown will begin next spring or summer due to flooding concerns.
Tutto Ferro, a steel fabrication shop, plans for the new bridge to include everything from mosaics to layers of metal designs. The state seal will be on the sidewalks.
"There will be a surprise on Nevada Day as well as the summer solstice when all the stars on the seal light up because all the stars shine through the railing," Christine Fey of the City of Reno said.
The artwork contract is 270-thousand dollars. It's paid for through the RTC fuel tax, Federal Highway Fund and Flood Management Authority sales tax.
The new bridge will take 12 to 18 months to complete, according to the City of Reno.
