CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei is urging state lawmakers to cherish their time working directly for Nevadans, and he promises to continue fighting for public lands in the Silver State to be transferred away from federal control.

The former state lawmaker made his remarks during a joint session of the Legislature Monday night.

The Carson City Republican says Nevada faces challenges unlike any of the other 47 states in the continental U.S. because the federal government owns 86 percent of the land. He says his efforts in Washington have often centered on opening up that land for the state's interests.

Amodei was first elected to Congress in 2011 to fill the seat left vacant when Dean Heller was appointed to the Senate. Amodei then cruised to a victory in the 2012 general election.
