Ammunition Shortage Hits Northern Nevada

CARSON CITY, NV - A buying frenzy has been triggered at gun shops nationwide. Now, it's hard to find ammunition in our area.

Gun shop owners from Reno to Carson City tell us people want to buy up as much ammunition as they can because they're worried the government is going to make it tougher for them to buy guns and ammo. Many are having to turn people away, telling them they're going to have to wait at least three months for ammunition.

"All my warehouses and all of my companies that I buy from don't have any guns or ammunition," says Steve Halen, owner of High Desert Sporting Arms in Carson City. "So I can't even buy to restock."

One of the owners of Nevada Gun Exchange in Carson City says there's not just a run on ammunition, but guns, especially AR-15s.

"People are afraid what the government is going to do to their rights to buy ammunition and firearms," says Chester Parks, of Nevada Gun Exchange.

Some law enforcement agencies around the country are in short supply, but that is not the case in our area. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says his office buys plenty of ammunition in advance, so they have no concerns there. It's the same at the Washoe County Sheriff's Office and the Reno Police Department.
