Air Race First Responders Honored

By  |

RENO, NV - “They're not professional responders,” explains Kaydie Paschall of the Washoe County cert program, “they're community members, and we train them and prepare them but it doesn't mean that responding suddenly becomes easy.”

She’s talking about the volunteer members of the community emergency response team, who leapt into action after a crash at the Reno Air Races earlier this year.

The group is among more than 50 agencies honored Thursday by the Washoe County Health District for their initial response to the devastating crash.

REMSA, fire, police, even guard members were some of the familiar emergency responders recognized by county officials.

There were also many more heroes that you might not recognize; agencies staffed by volunteers who were quick to act though seldom called upon.

Nevada 2-1-1 and Crisis Call Center volunteers were not at the airport, but they were a crucial point of contact taking missing person reports, and reconnecting survivors with friends and family.

Even Sierra Job Corps students helped keep the area secure for investigators.

For some of them, the ability to contribute was life changing.

“I feel like that day proved that I can handle something like that,” says student, Marquise Franklin “so I felt like I stepped up for the community.”

Washoe County Cert says they are always looking for new volunteers ready to be trained for emergency response.
