RENO, Nev.— The Reno Aces swept Friday night’s doubleheader against the Memphis Redbirds, with a 5-2 victory in Game One and a 11-3 victory in Game Two at Aces Ballpark.
RHP Charles Brewer shined in Game One, which was the completion of Thursday night’s suspended game. He threw six shutout frames, before allowing a run in each of the final two innings en route to his fifth victory of the season.
After Ed Easley’s RBI single in the second gave Reno an early 1-0 lead, the Aces swung into action for four runs in the third. Chris Owings hit his sixth triple of the season to plate Tony Campana for the first run of the inning, then was driven home by a Mike Jacobs single.
Easley and Matt Davidson each collected a pair of hits in Game One, with Davidson scoring twice and Easley knocking in two runs.
Reno exploded offensively in Game Two, with three multi-run innings. The first three Aces batters to the plate scored, including an RBI double off the bat of catcher Mike Brenly. The hit and RBI were both firsts for Brenly at the Triple-A level.
The Aces jumped on Memphis reliever Kevin Thomas in the fourth, with the first five batters reaching base. Reno pushed across five runs on just three hits, all of which were singles. A hit by pitch and a wild pitch each allowed Reno to score, before a throwing error allowed two more to cross the plate.
Mike Jacobs hit his 13th longball of the season, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI in Game Two. Leadoff batter Tyler Bortnick went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Reliever Nate Adcock was credited with the win. He gave up one earned run on a hit in 1.2 innings for the Aces.
The series continues Saturday night at Aces Ballpark. RHP Garrett Mock (8-6, 6.07 ERA) will get the nod for Reno, while the Redbirds will counter with LHP Tyler Lyons (6-1, 3.00 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
