Vehicle Registration Fees Up From 2009
Reno
If you drive an older registered car here in Nevada you could always count on lower fees to legally drive your vehicle. But all that changed last September when lawmakers changed the Government Services Tax.

Sparks Resident Robert Marr owns a well kept, white 20 year old Ford Pickup. Last year it cost home $43 to get his vehicle registered here in Nevada, this year is jumped to $62.

“It increased 33% my registration fee. I don't believe its right,” says Marr.

Marr lives on a fixed income and dependent on oxygen and medications to get by. While a 19 dollar increase in fees may not seem much to you, it makes a lot of difference to him, especially since he can't afford another car.

“After awhile, the only place it can depreciate to is the junk yard,” say Marr.

Marr says he doesn't remember voting for an increase in taxes, and he didn't. It happened here in Carson City 2009 when law makers passed Senate Bill 429 which changed the year depreciation used to calculate vehicle taxes.

Enacted last September the new calibrations are based on a ten percent increase from what you were paying before September 2009.

If you're car is three years old you'll pay 85% of assessed valuation instead of 75%, 5 years old 65% instead of 55% and so on. That is until your car hits ten years old. Instead of 5% you're now paying 15%.

“It costs $33 to register your car in Nevada that is less than 6000 pounds, and that can come as a surprise to a lot of motorists because they are writing checks and hitting their credit cards for hundreds of dollars. That's because what is attached to the vehicle registration is a government services tax,” says Tom Jacobs from Nevada’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

Jacobs says the money raised goes to local schools and counties depending upon where the driver lives. However the percentage increase on the car registration goes into the states general fund.

Since September, when that increase in the governmental tax increase went into effect, $45-million dollars has been put in the general fund.

I just registered a 2006 Cadillac with over 93,000 miles that I purchased from LV Cadillac for $10,995. The registration fee was $503.00. That's almost 5% of the value of the car. Of course they seem to value it by a very skewed depreciation schedule. I guess the moral is don't buy a car that was once expensive regardless of how little you are paying for it. Our lawmakers always like to talk like they are for the "little guy" but this kind of regressive tax is going to hit those with small incomes very hard. You wonder who writes up these bills. Does anyone who votes on them actually read them and think about the consequences. I guess anything is fair game on the table except cutting government spending, and especially their own salaries.

I have a small collection of exotic cars. Ranging from a 1971 Aston Martin DBS (33 built), 1976 Jensen, 1982 Aston, 1984 Maserati Q3 and a 1985 Ferrari mondial. I checked DMV and got a price on the registration of each car. 1976 Jensen GT-$50 1971 Aston Martin-$75 1984 Ferrari-$180 1984 Maserati-$200 1982 Aston Martin-$349 Each of these cars cost $34 to register. last year the government tax was added onto every car. This amounts to a increase of 33% to 1000%! To make a even worse impression at the DMV I was asked to leave because I made a SUGGESTION to a Supervisor to read the second paragraph of The Declaration of Independence. This Supervisor asked me if this is a threat! Don't the public schools teach The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States?
